Rural police stations lack resources: Limpopo DA – SABC News

The Limpopo Democratic Alliance (DA) says police stations have become easy targets for criminals.

The party was reacting to a foiled robbery at Jane Furse police station on Monday night in which a suspected thief was fatally shot.

The alleged thief entered the police station, disarmed a police officer and took his firearm. He was apparently shot by a police reinforcement team.

DA community safety spokeswoman Katlego Suzan Phala said police stations in rural areas are unresourced and lack capacity.

“This is not an isolated case. Less than five months ago, 20 armed criminals stole firearms and ammunition from Malamulele Police Station and stole cash from local businesses. DA reiterates our police stations are mostly underfunded and incompetent Undertrained police and poor crime intelligence cannot detect a crime before it happens.

Gunshots are a normal occurrence

Meanwhile, community members living next to Jane Furse Police Station have expressed shock at the foiled robbery.

Some locals say that the sound of gunfire is a normal occurrence as there are many taverns and robberies in the area.

“I heard gunshots. It first started from the side of the Chinese shop, then moved closer to the police station. We are used to hearing these noises when they rob the tavern and nearby businesses.

Limpopo Police have since said the Independent Police Investigations Directorate is investigating the incident.

Malamulele Police Station Robbery

In November last year, heavily armed men stormed a local police station and took police officers hostage in Malamulule.

The group fled with 14 rifles, shotguns and pistols, which they used to rob three businesses in the area.
