This month, we are delighted to present Osmoses, the developer of a new membrane technology for gas separation. Osmoses recently raised $ 3 million in a pre-seed funding round led by The Engine, the MIT-born venture capital firm that invests in Tough Tech. The Engine-led funding will fuel the company’s hiring and scaling of its gas separation materials platform.
Founded in 2021, Osmoses transforms chemical separations thanks to its innovative membrane. The membrane molecular filters are designed to have exceptional size selectivity, as they are able to distinguish gas molecules 100,000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. Current applications include hydrogen separation, carbon capture, and natural gas purification. The membrane also uses 40% to 60% less energy than the conventional separation process used for the purification of natural gas. Many industries stand to benefit from this technology, as current procedures are extremely energy-intensive and expensive.
Osmoses hopes to significantly reduce industrial energy consumption while accelerating the adoption of alternative energy sources. Today, molecular separations represent 15% of global energy consumption and generate 16% of CO2 emissions per year. The separation of gases and vapors with an energy-efficient membrane reduces carbon emissions from industrial processes. Osmoses technology is designed to be easily integrated into existing energy systems and offers the potential to “decarbonize the most difficult sectors of the economy,” according to Michael Kearney, director of The Engine.
Michael kearney Further states, “The Osmosis solution is not only essential for reducing emissions, but for sustaining domestic industry and job growth. Without such a cost effective solution, these jobs could be exported to countries with less stringent emissions targets, which is not good for the United States and not good for our planet. “
