From BBN staff: There have been ongoing land issues in the Ministry of Natural Resources since the new Johnny Briceno administration took office in Belmopan. Among these are the constant complaints of duplicate land titles. This happens when 2 or more people receive titles on the same land. In many cases, the plaintiffs then seek compensation for the property.

In an interview with News 5 this week, Natural Resources Minister Cordel Hyde said his department is spending a lot of time tackling these cases.

Minister Hyde noted that the government had recently settled a 50-year-old case. In this case, a grandchild in his mid-60s settled with government compensation. Hyde added that the government at the time had acquired land from the family in Ladyville and they had waited years for compensation.

The minister further said that in southern Belize, another family is suing the government for $17 million in a similar case.
