Europe, China to strengthen cooperation on aviation environmental issues

Representatives of European and Chinese aviation bodies have identified areas of mutual interest in sustainable aviation as part of an ongoing cooperation project.

At a workshop on sustainable aviation strategies in Europe and China held this week, members of the European Commission, EASA and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC ) met with industry and academia to launch renewed sustainability cooperation. The workshop gave participants the opportunity to share information on environmental programs and identify areas of mutual interest and future cooperation.

Measures discussed included the evolution of the carbon market for aviation, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, and ICAO environmental protection standards.

The event was organized within the framework of the second EU-China Aviation Partnership (APP) project. The three-year project, which runs until 2024, is managed by EASA. European industry, EU organizations and EU national aviation authorities are all contributing their expertise to the effort, exchanging information on aviation trends and technologies.

The cooperation will place more emphasis on some topics covered in the first EU-China JPA and explore new possible areas of exchange.

The objectives of the APP include strengthening institutional relations, deepening dialogue and cooperation between aviation authorities, encouraging regional cooperation and supporting the implementation of aviation agreements.

There is also a focus on raising awareness of best practices in aviation safety, promoting EU standards, stepping up efforts to protect the environment and encouraging climate action.

The project allows the EU to continue and intensify cooperation with China as previously implemented under the first EU-China JPA.

This week’s meeting was the first in a series of workshops that will focus on sustainable aviation strategies. The next workshops already planned for 2022 will focus on creating synergies and strengthening cooperation in the area of SAF.
