Borehamwood nursery community ‘devastated’ after toys and resources burn in fire

Children, parents and staff at a nursery in Borehamwood are ‘devastated’ after a fire destroyed all the toys and resources in their shed. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and police attended the scene today (28 March).

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 5.26pm on Sunday March 27 to a fire at a commercial building on Leeming Road, Borehamwood. The large building has four floors, but only the ground floor was in flames.

Crews from Watford and Borehamwood were present and the fire was extinguished at 5.43pm. The nearby shed, belonging to Windsor Hall Nursery School, was burned in the blaze.

Kayleigh Greening, staff member and nursery mum, said: “We’ve pretty much lost everything. It must be hundreds and hundreds of pounds worth of resources. We’ve had the police out all night. There’s a team fire investigation here. Over the past six years, we have worked very hard to build the contents of this hangar.

“We are based in a fairly deprived area. Many of our cohort of children come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds. It is their only outlet. It is just devastating to lose what we have lost. All these families in the estate have been coming in and asking how they can help. We’ve had a lot of support on Facebook, with people asking us how they can donate. But we’re literally starting from scratch.

Equipment burned in the fire

Kayleigh added: “We’re so very sad. My daughter is also going to nursery. She has extra needs, and it’s her routine to come here every day. She’s in bad shape today because the room is empty. There aren’t his usual toys to go to. We’re pretty depressed and devastated about it to be honest.”

Staff members are asking local people to donate any equipment and children’s toys they may have. The full list of items they’ve lost and will need to replace can be found below:
